Amalfi

Amalfi was founded by Romans in the 4th century A.D. During 939 to 1131 the city experienced its heyday as independent and influential sea-republic till it was finally thoroughly despoiled by forces from Pisa. Today Amalfi is a well-known strongly frequented tourist place. Among the places of interest are the fascinating lanes and corridors, (2), (3) from the Middle Ages, Sant'Andrea Cathedral with its large outside staircase, cloister and museum and also Grotta dello Smeraldo (Emerald Grotto).

As a trip goal for a walk (approx. 2 hours) present themselves the ancient paper factories in Valle dei Mulini (mill valley). Starting from the Piazza del Duomo taking via Capuano you arrive at Largo Marini. From there leads a way on the left side of the valley Valle del Canneto to the paper factories. On that occasion you can as well visit the paper museum Museo della carta (www.museodellacarta.it).

You may also use the bus line up to the neighbouring Ravello, visit the famous mansions Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone and afterwards return walking to Amalfi or Atrani. The paths mainly lead through a beautiful landscape with orchards.
