Salerno

In the beginning Romans started to settle on an originally Etruscan dominated territory. From that developed in 194 B.C. the Roman colony "Salernum".
End of the 5th century the city fell into the hands of the East Goths and the Byzantines. The castle on the hill Bonadies dates from this time. In the middle of the 7th century it was taken by the Langobards (= Lombards ) and the castle got the name of their sovereign Arechi.
In 1077 the Normans under Robert Guiscard took over the rule, which led to a better economic development of the city. During this period the first and most important medical school of the Middle Ages developed in Salerno. Even though the university of Salerno came into being only in 1970, it is acknowledged as the very first medical faculty of Europe. Under Robert Guiscard in 1080 the cathedral ,  (2) was built, to which also finds from Paestum were supplied. In the year 1194 Henry IV destroyed and reconstructed the city.

Today Salerno has approximately 150 000 inhabitants. Most of them don't live on tourism. Some major industries in Salerno are from the branches ceramic(s), textiles, metal and mechanical engineering. Moreover there is an industrial harbour,  (2) and of course a marina. Last not least Salerno is the capital of a province with the same name and hosts an episcopate.
